Welcome Caregivers!

(To skip to this week's post, scroll down...)

Special needs situations, like those we find in a home healthcare setting, demand special responses.

The fact that you’ve registered to participate in this blog is a sign that you are in a special needs situation. You are probably under a tremendous amount of stress and strain – both physically and emotionally – and you probably feel very alone right now.

Take heart…you are not alone.

For what it’s worth, the National Family Caregivers Association (visit their website at www.thefamilycaregiver.org/about/) estimates that there are approximately 54 million people in the nation currently caring for someone in need. It’s not an easy road, and that’s why I’ve created HomeBoundResources.com.

Let's not reinvent the wheel. Together, as a community, we are the experts in collecting and sharing the most important resources, information, and help for people who are challenged by a home healthcare situation.I really do care about how caregivers and patients achieve the highest standard of living possible. To that end, I recently introduced contributing writers as part of Tammy's Think Tank Team. Everybody benefits by a little help from their friends! Look for interesting articles on Fitness, Relationship Dynamics, Mobility, Overcoming Challenges. If you have an issue that needs addressed, let us know. You'd be surprised by the creative solutions people use!

I understand that every situation is different, and good advice in one situation may not be so appropriate in another. So, please let us know what’s working and what’s not. Visit http://www.homeboundresources.com/, and explore the tips, resources and publications available.

And, if you’ve got some advice of your own on a topic that I’ve written about, please feel free to e-mail your feedback to me. This effort works best when we all help each other.

Looking for Individual Health Insurance

Until recently, my husband and I had healthcare provided by an employer. When we realized we would no longer be covered, my hair started to curl. I've been so accustomed to making sure everyone else around me was taken care of that I panicked when I had to think about me.

It is almost more overwhelming to have to think about one's self than it is to think about the care of another. I had lots of emotional issues swirling around me and somewhere in the middle of that I needed to wade through it all and find answers to my questions.

I use lists to help me get things done, so that's what I did in my search for insurance. I made a list based on conversations that I had with various friends who have had real experiences:
  • Prescription coverage
  • Annual cap on out-of-pocket expenses
  • 0% co-insurance coverage (this means that I don't have to pick up any additional annual costs)
  • Hospitalization
  • ...just in case...maternity coverage
  • Reasonable deductable
  • Reasonable office visits

In addition, I called around to some of my friends whom I know are in a similar situation where they provide their own coverage. I received some valuable input that I factored into my equation.

  • One friend had major medical with a $3,000 deductible, but no office visits or prescriptions. She recommended I use www.esurance.com
  • Another supplements their major medical plan with a Healthcare Savings Account. This is an interesting option because the funds you save are tax-free. She told me she has a debit card which she uses for everything that's medical related.
  • Still another friend, whom I met at random at an event, shared her experience battling breast cancer with her major medical insurance. Her annual out-of-pocket was $15,000 with additional co-insurance costs. She would not go this route again.
  • None of the folks I've talked to have suggested that I speak with their insurance representative. Most know about www.esurance.com

Actually, www.esurance.com was daunting when I first signed on to the site. I don't have a lot of patience to wade through the details. So, I asked for a call from one of the representatives. The phone rang immediately!

I shared my criteria list (above) and he boiled it down rather quickly for me. I knew I wanted to stay with one of about four companies and within those, it was clear that only one was an option.

Your experience with purchasing private insurance would be much appreciated. I hope you'll share your thoughts here at the HomeBoundResources Blogspot.
